Thirty leading Italian automotive companies are coming to Pune on April 20th to meet with top Indian carmakers for the inaugural INDO-ITALIAN AUTO SUMMIT 2011.

The summit -- the first of its kind – reflects the increasing global importance of India’s fast-growing auto market. It will build on the long tradition of collaboration between carmakers in the two countries, which both excel at small car design and production.

“Italian companies are eager to support India’s fast-growing auto sector, building on the deep historical ties between the two nations,” said Italy’s Ambassador to India, Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte. “Italy has a great tradition of small car manufacturing, making it an ideal partner as India as emerges as a global hub of small-car production.”

Over 50 delegates from Italy’s top automotive design, engineering and component makers, who work with global auto majors like BMW, Ford, Volkswagen, Fiat, Alpha-Romeo, Mercedes and Audi, will meet with leading companies in India, including Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, GM, Force Motors, and Eicher.

India’s car market is expected to be the world’s third-largest by 2020, drawing in international players from Japan, Korea, Germany and the United States. But no country has a longer or more iconic history in India than Italy.

In the 1950s, Italy’s Fiat and India’s Premier together created the first mass-produced car in India after Independence: The Fiat 1100. Later known as the Premier Padmini, the model still reigns as Mumbai’s classic black and yellow taxi.

In the 1960s, Italy’s Piaggio, which produces the famous Vespa scooter, worked with the Bajaj family to produce the first scooters and autorickshaws in India. India’s ubiquitious autorickshaws were modeled after Piaggio’s Ape (“Bee”) three-wheeler, created for the Italian market after World War II.

As a gesture to that history, a rare Fiat Topolino 500 C from 1949 – believed to be the first Fiat car to have come to India – will be displayed in front of the Pune Marriot Hotel and Convention Center at 4pm on April 20th.

Unlike the United States, Italy has a long tradition of small car manufacturing. Today, small and medium sized Italian auto companies are ready to bring that expertise to India, the world’s largest market for super-small cars.

Among the delegates will be representatives from Italy’s award-winning Tesco Go SpA, a leading engineering, services and car design company based in the Italian auto hub of Turin. Tesco, which is also known for its high-end concept car development, was voted Italy’s top autobody maker in 2010 by Italy’s automotive association, ANFIA. Its clients include Bajaj, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Ford, and Suzuki.

Also present will be Mevis SpA, one of Italy’s leading auto component exporters, which supplies Opel, Fiat, GM, Saab and Daewoo, among many others.

The two-day conference -- organized by the Italian Trade Commission and Cofindustria, Italy’s leading business association -- is open to the press on April 20th.

Italy’s ambassador to India H.E. Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte will be speaking, along with Gianfranco Carbonato, President of the Turin Industrial Association, and Mauro Ferrari, Vice President of Italy’s automotive association, ANFIA. A complete schedule is attached.
